Gender Stereotypes
Living the Female LifeHave you ever seen the film Mulan? Have you ever analyzed how her character is illustrated? Well, Disney has had a huge impact with this film by shaping the "official role" of a women. For instance, at the beginning of this film Mulan is dressed up by her mother and grandmother in a fancy dress and with make-up (something she is not used to) to go and impress the matchmaker to see if she is "qualified to have a husband". however, when she arrived to the matchmaker's home, Mulan turns out to be clumsy. The matchmaker get furious with Mulan. This scene gives a huge and negative impact on young girls by illustrating that there is a specific way to act in order to find a husband.
Looking into Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, we see how women are represent it as if they are only good in doing the chores of the house. We see how Snow White gets happy and excited to clean the house of the Dwarfs. Yes, there are women that like doing the chores of the house, but not all women do. On the other hand, the Dwarfs go to work every day in diamond mines. Yes, “diamond” mines, so while Snow White is digging for dirty clothes, they are digging for diamonds. Just the thought that their work is in a diamond mine is ridiculous. Disney needs to understand that these gender stereotypes are not something to keep advertising on their movies. They are offending many women and it is inaccurate that people are growing up with this mentality.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
In the cartoon, The Hunchback of Notre Dame , we can see how Disney has negatively stereotyped people with disabilities. For example, the main character Quasimodo is described with words such as "monster" or "unholy demon" due to the disability that he has. As a result, this stereotypes people with disabilities as being evil. So it is essential that these stereotypes be recognized, for these awful comments can lead children to stereotype disabled people as well as cause them to believe that people who are not "normal" are bad. |
